The
Corner Coins & Jewelry, New and Old, Common and Rare
By
Tara Marie Berry
“Where
are you from?” Scott asks the gentleman across the counter.
“North
Dakota,” he replies. “I come down here once a year and
just have to stop in to buy a nickel!”
Gold & Silver Investments, Rare Coins, Estate Appraisals, Heirloom
Jewelry, Fine Jewelry and Jewelry Repair are all packaged together
back in the corner, right on the corner of Mulberry and Remington
in Fort Collins. Conveniently located just down the road from the
OLD TOWN business district of Fort Collins, THE CORNER Coins &
Jewelry Inc. features the new and the old, the common and the rare.
Ranging from word of mouth to the many repeat customers, THE CORNER
Coins & Jewelry is also proud of the regular visits from out-of-staters.
“The
older you get, the more people mean to you.” The Andersens and
their assistant, Scott, truly appreciate every person who walks through
that door in the corner.
John Andersen and his wife Carole have been running THE CORNER Coins
& Jewelry at 426 Remington for fifteen years. Their assistant,
Scott, also spends a lot of time at THE CORNER. The welcoming corner
shop, born in 1977, is a reflection of John’s long time passion
for coins and collectibles. THE CORNER Coins & Jewelry’s
collection, ranging from rare, gift and commemorative to old, new,
and certified, vary from half cents through US gold, US paper money
and better foreign currencies. Also showing some consignment and lose
stones in the jewelry area, the Andersens never know what they’re
going to get!
John
appraises coins for collectors, attorneys and banks, along with the
curious passers by. He prides himself on his vast knowledge of coins
and knowing the true value of each piece. While many competitors and
auctioneers are so anxious to profit from the raising values of coins,
John specializes in fairness.
“I buy and sell so many coins because I am fair. I do things
how they should be done. Fair Prices. Fair Buying.”
“I am really, truly thankful for what I have here.” Most
of THE CORNER Coins & Jewelry buying happens in the store. John
does enjoy some light traveling—Kansas, Wyoming, Nebraska—and
will fly to buy the right coins, jewelry, stones, and stained art
glass, which he also dabbles in a bit.
With the introduction of the new state quarters in 1999, John is happy
to see a renewal in the coin collector’s scene. Old or ex-collectors
have begun to collect again, while young or new collectors learn to
appreciate the true value of a coin. After all, collections really
are a show of appreciation toward our legal tender.
Featuring
a full line of Roosevelt dimes, the pure silver coins are encased
for show in order: 1946 through 1964. US gold coins which were also
once legal tender, show Liberty and the Indian, which were the major
design types of their period. St. Augusta Gaudens, designer of the
first twenty dollar gold coin in 1907, is one of John’s favorites.
Platinum coins, American and worldwide, can be found at THE CORNER
Coins & Jewelry, too. Originally they were just a means of the
government selling precious metals to the general public. John has
found much more in his collections of coins: history, knowledge, fairness,
and liberty.
And, of course, while there are always new and different ways to store
and display collectors’ coins, THE CORNER Coins & Jewelry
carries a full line of coin and stamp supplies: albums, mounts, tubes,
etc.
Across
from the coins, a sparkling 2-karat diamond has made a home next to
the lockets, crosses, and stars of David. Carole Andersen, a tour
guide of Israel, also features some original Messianic Jewish pieces.
GIA and EGL diamonds are another specialty of the Andersens. Simply
put, they like to sell nice quality jewels and stones. And with these
fair prices, they come and go very quickly!
So, stop in soon at THE CORNER Coins & Jewelry Monday through
Friday 9:30am to 5pm, and Saturday from 9:30am to 4pm. Catch these
great deals, learn something new about what’s hiding in YOUR
piggy bank, or just stop by to say HI to John, Carole, and Scott!
