New Owners Want to Continue Quality at Classic Treasures Antique and Collectable Mall in Aurora

By Peggy DeStefano

A recent visit to Classic Treasures Antiques and Collectables Mall in Aurora proved to be an enjoyable experience.

Because of the T-Rex project, I wondered whether I would be caught in traffic but a friend said, “It’s easy to get to Classic Treasures. Just head East on Evans. It turns into Iliff, continue East until you reach Havana and there it is!” She was right. And considering how beautiful the blossoming trees were as I travelled, I was thoroughly relaxed upon my arrival.

Mary and Larry Spier are the new owners of Classic Treasures Mall. They were there to greet me. Relative newly-weds, they are also grandparents to 12 kids between the two of them. Both Colorado natives, they have been dabbling in antiques for some time now. When the Mall became available for purchase, they decided to take the plunge.

Mary, who will soon retire from Gates Rubber, where she is in International Distribution, personally collects Van Briggle pottery and generally loves glass and pottery. Larry, who retired from the Public Service Company, where he worked first in the power plants and then in the warehouse, collects and specializes in toys. You can see and buy from his rather extensive toy collection at the Mall.

I asked Larry if he played with the toys with all his grandkids and he didn’t deny it but Mary chimed in, “He’s still playing with them himself!”

This adorable couple is just getting on their feet as Mall owners. They are grateful to Pam Brodie, their manager and Nikki Mattocks, their assistant manager for making the transition from enjoying antiques and collectables as a hobby to making their “hobby a business,” as Larry pointed out.

Pam and Nikki did the same work for the previous owners and so they have helped Mary and Larry tremendously. Pam also is responsible for putting together the great ads Classic Treasures puts into the Mountain States Collector each month. (See page 12 of this issue to see their ad. We have always gotten so many compliments on the ad.) Pam and Nikki are a delight to deal with and Classic Treasures have a real treasure in them.

About the Mall— The Classic Treasures Mall is 11,000 square feet. It features over 80 quality antique dealers who specialize in American & European formal furniture, select china and glass, silver, estate and collectible jewelry, advertising items, toys, dolls, Western primitives, crystal chandeliers, sporting equipment, quilts, linens, primitives, coins, collectables, discontinued American dinnerware, and books.

I personally found about 5 different items that would add to my family’s various collections. It was fun to explore each booth. The Mall is full. There are only a few showcases and maybe two or three spaces available for anyone interested in joining this convivial group.

“We personally prefer selling our antiques through a mall,” Mary explains. “This way we have free time to travel and be with our families.”

Mary and Larry want to continue with the goal of making Classic Treasures a place for quality collectables. They also want to make sure your experience is comfortable. They recently added a water cooler for their customers and have plans for many improvements. Right now they’re just trying to comprehend the awesome responsibility of running a vital antique mall. Having the opportunity to meet Mary and Larry Spier, I have no doubt that they will accomplish their goals and do it in a way that everyone will appreciate.
